Working Border Collies

I am a small scale breeder of Working Border Collies and selectively breed 1-2 litters per year. All of my stockdogs are registered through the American Border Collie Association and not the American Kennel Club. It is my opinion that working dogs should be registered through a working registry, one that focuses on the working abilities of the canine and not the aesthetics of the animal. Looks are nice but...can it "get-r-done?"

My Border Collies are medium rough coated and have medium builds. Weights range from 30 to 45 pounds with males being slightly heavier and taller. I like stockdogs with DRIVE! Many folks ask me the same question, "Are your dogs hyper?" No! Hyper or spastic dogs are not a pleasure to own. They are either a product of poor breeding or of strong working lines and have no job. I produce biddible puppies in the colors of classic black and white, tricolor, white and red, and predominately white.

Puppy prices generally range from $450.00 to $650.00 for male or female and are sold under contract. Occasionally, I have older puppies or started young dogs. The prices on them vary based on the amount of training and the dog's pedigree. Call me for current prices and available litters.

***** K-9 Broker Service ***** If you need a Border Collie and I don't have one, I can broker the sale. I will work to find you the best puppy and do it as if it were going to be my own! My fee is generally 30% over the puppy cost, plus any expenses. I have a great network of solid, reliable stockdog breeders to work with. I offer the same service with hair sheep.

Sorry, no planned  Border Collie puppies for 2008.

Jess and the hat. There was "something" about that hat she liked. Jess is my first Border Collie that was purchased for this farm. I had three before her as a kid. For folks who have never owned one, if you're not an active person, don't buy one! This is a doing, thinking, and action breed. Jess' job is to move sheep on the farm and herd geese in my goose control business, FIRST STATE BORDER PATROL. (Photo by Howard Gaines III)

I like my Border Collies...HOT!  We serve them up FARM STYLE! (Photo by Howard Gaines III)

They say that white dogs can't work sheep because the sheep won't "respect" them...RIGHT! Skye can prove that mindset wrong. (Photo by Howard Gaines III)

Gaines Border Collies are from working lines. If you purchase a puppy with the intent of using it as a worker and it doesn't, I'll test it at 10 months of age. If my findings determine that it is genetically a dud and doesn't work, I'll give you your purchase price back! Call for more details.

The difference between a working stockdog and a show lines dog is like the difference between a pickup and a sports car. Genetics and training play key roles in the outcome one gets from their K-9.

"Biscuit" is a Split x Spot breeding. At ten months of age, she is showing great interest in working sheep.

Split is from my first breeding. She is the daughter of Skye and the mother of Biscuit. Working Border Collies should have a strong desire to please the shepherd. They should also want to work in any weather condition. Split is also used in my goose control business, FIRST STATE BORDER PATROL.

"Say, it doesn't smell like a Deere!"

Unlike some Border Collie breeders, I stand behind my work. I have established myself as a responsible breeder, one who knows working dogs and how to treat people. To date, I have not had one Border Collie come back to me for being off the wall, failing to show herding instincts, or for failing to be a loving pet. It's all about quailty!

Gaines Working Border Collies don't last long. Even at an early age, they seem to vanish! Those who own my Border Collies won't part with them. I have dogs working on livestock farms, doing goose control work, acting as therapy dogs, and being great family pets.

Notice: We are a State of Delaware Licensed Kennel. License #3569. In addition to being licensed, we have also been inspected by the Kent County SPCA. You will not find us to be a "rag-tag," backyard breeder, or to have a poor quality farming operation. Quality is as quality does!

And here is Tanner. He is now doing goose control work on a farm near the Maryland Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Gaines Border Collies in action. Tanner is a Dirk x Jess breeding.
